JAMMU, Nov 17 : Making themselves self-reliant and empowered is the only aim of a group of women who are taking part in the ongoing Sale-cum-Exhibition organized by the J&K State Women's Development Corporation here at Kala Kendra.
The destitute women drawn from different parts of the state are exhibiting their wide range of products in the stalls put up in the event which has been sponsored by National Minorities Development & Finance Corporation, New Delhi.
The products which are on the display in the exhibition include soft toys, paper-mache, ladies suits, artificial flowers, pickles and sozni embroidery items to name a few which are enough proof to showcase the multi-faceted talents of the women participating in the event and amalgamating at Kala Kendra from every nook and corner of the state.
Speaking to Early Times, few of the women participants said that their aim is to seek livelihoods with dignity for females belonging to economically weaker sections of the society who reside in urban as well as rural pockets of the state.
"Women like me who are participating in the exhibition have only one goal of leveling the field of employment for disadvantaged females by providing livelihood opportunities that enhance our economic status, self-esteem and decision making within our families," said Mehbooba, who hails from Sopore and has put up a stall of hand knit items.
The other participating women who have come from Srinagar, Tangmarg, Kupwara, Reasi, Jammu and other areas of the state.
While Parveena Akhtar hails from Reasi, Sunita is from Nanak Nagar Jammu on the other hand another woman namely Muneera hails from Lal Chowk, Srinagar which is a testimony to the fact that they have vowed to get empowered irrespective of their social status vis-a-vis their areas of origin. "We have acquired non-traditional livelihoods with self-respect and we are eventually developing into a cadre of empowered women who have become true agents of a positive change in the social set up," said Sunita of Nanak Nagar, Jammu.
"We request the authorities to organize more such programmes on regular basis as these types of events provide us an opportunity to showcase our talents among the people of the state… Moreover, these platforms further strengthen our resolve to get empowered with pride and passion," she added.
