Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 25: The High Court order seeking demolition of illegal structures around water bodies is being flouted with impunity in south Kashmir's Shopian town where illegal structures continues to come up along three major rivers. Three major rivers Rambiara, Sangaloo and Noet, according to locals, are source of sustenance for hundreds of villages of Shopian and Pulwama Districts. The waters from these rivers feed 100% population of these districts.
However unchecked illegal constructions of commercial and residential complexes comprising toilets and washrooms by influential people of the area in nexus with administrative officials despite a High Court order is posing threat to the rivers.
The details reveal that from the areas of Chowgam, Kanipora, Tak Mohalla, Gada Mohalla, Peer Mohalla, Punoo Mohalla, Mangnoo Mohalla, Bonabazar and New colony Gratewali Mohalla, abundance of sewage from toilets and washrooms vehemently adulterate the water of River Sangaloo. Likewise river 'Noet' flowing from other side of town with each passing day according to locals reduces in size as illegal construction of commercial complexes goes on with full swing from Peer Mohalla and Batapora areas down towards Kukli Mazar area of town. "Sangaloo and Noet are no more now, people are selfish and Government is a silent spectator, illegal construction goes on everywhere on the banks of these rivers, once famous for purity both these rivers look like garbage dumping sites," Mushtaq Ahmad a local resident told Early Times.
According to official accounts both river Sangaloo and Noet are supposed to be 25 feet wide, however, un-official figures reveal that due to unchecked illegal constructions on banks of these rivers the distance has been reduced to mere 12 feet. Official sources said that there are no records available with the government about the total no of illegal commercial and residential complexes constructed on banks of both these rivers.
Marred by the repeated outbreak of life taking diseases like Cholera and Jaundice, the villagers of Krawoora, Trapadpora, Kilora and Chak Sidiq Khan said that despite repeated requests, authorities do not bother to demolish illegal toilets on banks of river Sangaloo which is source of potable water supply to them.
Likewise villagers from Pinjoora, Aglar, Trenz and Turkawangam said that they fear to lose their agricultural activities very soon as river Noet which is only source of water to their agricultural fields is being encroached by people in main town.
People of Arhama village said that a famous stream flowing in front of Chief Medical officer Shopian near Kukli-Mazar area is being encroached illegally.
Pertinently after last year floods, Jammu and Kashmir High court had directed the state government to pull down all illegal constructions that have come up around water bodies in Kashmir.
Deputy Commissioner Shopian,G.M Dar said that he will look in to the matter and will bring people responsible for illegal constructions around rivers and streams to the book.
