Srinagar 2nd coldest after Pahalgam, Kargil freezes at -16.6 deg, wet weather from Jan 26

Srinagar, Jan 24: The summer capital of Srinagar, recording minus 5.5 degree celsius minimum temperature, was second coldest place after Pahalgam, a world famous health resort in the Kashmir valley, where dry and chilly weather during night is likely to end on January 26 when isolated rain is predicted.
Border town of Kargil recorded coldest night of the winter so far after the minimum temperature dropped further and settled at minus 16.6 degree while it was minus 15.8 degee at Leh in Ladakh region.
World famous Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and other water bodies, besides taps were frozen again after the minimum temperature witnessed further drop in the city while it was more chilly in the outskirts and open places. MeT department spokesman said due to clear sky mercury remained below normal during the night though day temperature remained above normal despite bone chilling icy cold winds.
He said during the next 24 hours, there would be no change in the weather conditions as night will remain chilly while the mercury during the day will be above normal.
However, a Western Disturbance is likely to hit the region on January 26 which could result in isolated rain in the Valley, as a result the temperature in night will improve and day will become colder.
There would be scattered, isolated and fairly widespread rain in the Jammu , Kashmir and Ladakh from January 27 for next two days, he said. Due to dry weather and clear sky, the minimum temperature in the city dropped further and settled at minus 5.5 degree, 3.5 degree below normal, resulting in freezing of water bodies, including Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake and nullahs. Majority parts, particularly in the interior parts, remained frozen. He said due to clear sky the maximum temperature in the city was 14.1 degrees, seven notches above normal in the city, where the sky would be clear and become partly cloudy later in the day and the maximum and minimum temperature would be around 12 degree abnd minus 4 degree during the next 24 hours.
