Police analyze ISIS 'Kashmir support' angle
‘Geelani undermining development to maintain his hegemony’
1/25/2016 12:13:15 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 24: Police and other security agencies are analyzing the recent threat issued by the terror outfit ISIS and are investigating the veracity of the claim that Kashmiri militants are affiliated with the outfit, sources told Early Times.
They said, "ISIS claiming that they have got the support of Kashmiri militants is a serious issue and it cannot be brushed aside."
"We have seen during the recent past a few miscreants coming on streets and hoisting the ISIS flags. We cannot always say that they have no patrons and they do it for fun," a Police officer said.
"There is every possibility about second rung separatist leaders, who are unhappy with Geelani and others, being involved in propagating ISIS ideology in Kashmir. We are working on different angles and are keeping a close vigil on the people who indulge in activism on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter," the officer added.
Sources claimed that "Jammu and Kashmir Police have got instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs to keep a watch on the activities of the released militants and the stone-pelters."
They said the JK Police and other agencies have been asked not to take the ISIS threat lightly. "MHA has instructed the Police to coordinate with the central forces and the agencies to keep the track of the developments and look for the local ISIS supporters in Kashmir," sources added.
Meanwhile, the Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani has tried to underplay the ISIS threat in Jammu and Kashmir, apparently to maintain his hegemony, which the group has challenged.
Geelani on Saturday claimed: "There are no chances of presence of ISIS in this region but these kinds of statements can provide a tool for India and they will try in every possible way to defame the struggle of Kashmiri people in the entire world."
Sources said that Geelani is trying to underplay the development to prevent security agencies and the international community from tightening their noose around the separatists and declaring all of them as terrorists. "Another factor for Geelani snubbing the ISIS is that the outfit has made it clear that Kashmiri leaders are useless and they would be taken to task," sources added.
They claimed that Geelani and others fear that if ISIS appears in Kashmir it would render them "useless" and they would have nothing to sell.
Sources said that separatists would never like anyone else to come forward and hijack their agenda. "Another factor for Geelani opposing ISIS is that the terror outfit is dead against the rulers in Pakistan and by endorsing the ISIS Geelani cannot annoy his bosses sitting across the Line of Control," they added.
