Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 19: Despite declaring Mahjoor Nagar Bridge unsafe for vehicular movement, the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department has miserably failed to stop traffic on the said bridge.
R&B department had erected signboards on both sides of bridge cautioning people against plying vehicles over it; although the word of warning has been taken for-granted with the authorities closing its eyes over the grave issue.
The bridge has developed deep ruts all-around prompting authorities to declare it unsafe for vehicular movement; however the nonstop movement of light and heavy vehicles has not only put question mark over the concerned authority's earnestness but also poses threats of serious accident to people.
"The department after erecting warning board never bothered to even examine the dilapidated condition of bridge, this is Kashmir and people hardly take these warnings serious. As far as the bridge is concerned it has developed cracks while as the nonstop vehicular movement makes it even exposed," Abdul Hamid Dar a Rajbagh resident told 'Early Times'.
He said that the authorities have confined their responsibilities to mere warnings while as people without caring for repercussions continue to put their lives in trouble.
"This is the duty of Roads and Buildings department to put a stop on traffic movement for transitory period, traffic movement should be barred until the repairing of bridge which is yet to be started is completed with assurance that the same is safe for any sort of vehicular movement,'' he added.
He said that thousands of light and heavy vehicles ply over Mahjoor Nagar Bridge on daily basis while as the authorities have no control or command to put a stop on troublesome vehicular movement.
"Yes the department had earlier erected a signboard on both sides of bride, it is a bit difficult to put an employee on job for full time, we have other engagements also," a senior official in R&B department wishing anonymity said.
He was however quick to add that the department will write to traffic police to look into the so that the vehicular movement is stopped till the repairing is started.
Despite repeated attempts' Chief Engineer Roads and Buildings (R&B) department, Satish Kumar Razdaan could not be contacted for official version.
When this correspondent spoke to locals they accused the authorities of taking the issue in lighter vein, '' this is the height of negligence, authorities have to take some tangible steps ,"they said.
