Mehbooba acted differently than Omar, saved JK from 2010-like situation

srinagar, Apr 19: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's ability of controlling the situation took people back to the summer unrest of 2010 when situation could have been controlled in a similar way but Omar Abdullah, then Chief Minister, preferred outing in Gulmarg instead of leading from the front.
The sporadic clashes that erupted in most parts of Kashmir valley after the killing of five people last week could have resulted in another 2010 like summer agitation, had Mehbooba not taken full control of the ground situation and making every bit to pacify peoples' anger.
In the year 2010, a similar situation was confronted by the State but went out of the control of the State dispensation with the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah deeming in uncontrollable. It led to the killing of 120 people during the violent stone pelting incidents that engulfed valley for more than two months. The summer unrest of 2010 also caused devastation in crores to the public property, leaving the local economy in shambles.
There are at present the voices of concern being heard that had the situation of 2010 contained by Omar Abdullah then in a similar way as was done by Mehbooba at present, the loss of lives and public property could have been saved.
On June 21, 2010, when the situation was subtly moving out of the control of the State Government, then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was enjoying the weekend with his family at Gulmarg.
A Delhi based newspaper reported that Omar can run his Government from Gulmarg but his return to the health resort while Srinagar was mourning its two young men and the city's two main hospitals were being crowded with wounded protestors strengthens the view that the current Government is casual in its approach to deal with the situation. Instead of introducing a less lethal crowd control mechanism in police, the Government, it seems, hopes erecting barricades and restricting movement of people would put an end to the cycle of killings.
Later, the Omar admitted of enjoying time with his family at Gulmarg when Srinagar was burning. "I was in Gulmarg with my family. I chaired the security meet in Srinagar and then rushed back to the tourist resort," Omar said that time in an interview with the New Delhi based TV news channel.
Meanwhile, the Government in 2016 acted in a different way. The Chief Minister held back to back meetings with the home officials, police officers, deputy commissioners and the people who have a link to the ground situation, "Meeting victim's family and assuring justice to them was something that sent a clear message across. It pacified peoples' anger and made the situation to limp towards the normalcy," said a police official, adding that had there not been the measures taken without the delay, the scenes would have been turbulent.
