Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 19: The Irrigation and Flood Control Department virtually has failed to bring respite to the famers community living at the tail ends of various irrigation grid spread across the canals courtesy the callous and non serious approach to manage 'water regulatory system'
Sources told Early Times that in order to provide irritation water to farmers through canals, khuls water regulatory system has to be put in place at the every heads of the divisions so that discharge of flow could be regulated, controlled as per requirement and be distributed properly to all the areas, but due to sheer negligence of the Irrigation Department, this vital part of regulatory system is missing thereby at some place flow of the water meant of irrigation purpose remains continue and at some places canals remain dry.
"The areas at the tail ends particularly border villages are more neglected and these poor farmers have to rely on the mercy of nature. It has been found that around 17 schemes including 2 Major Minor, 15 Minor Irrigation of six divisions of the State where these regulatory system have not been provided at any head work of the 15 Minor Irrigation schemes to regulate the flow of designed discharge of water into canals/ khuls," they maintained further adding that there was no control of overflow of water into these canals/ khuls.
Sources further informed that the issue has been put up before the Irrigation Department on several occasions by the different front but the Department did not bother to give due attention towards this genuine issue pertaining to farmers. "For farmers, the success of the crops is entirely dependent on the timely availability of irrigated water which department is duty bound to provide but department has miserably failed.
"Every year numbers of centrally sponsored schemes worth crores of rupees are launched for ensuring supply of irrigated water to every fields and particularly at tail ends but despite spending huge amount nothing appears concrete on the ground which creates apprehension of misappropriation of funds," they alleged.
