Tourism deptt abandons late Mufti's projects in Bijbehara

Anantnag, Apr 19: Tourism department has suspended construction work on four key tourism projects in Bijbehara assembly segment of South Kashmir.
Official sources told Early Times that department stopped the work on January 7, the day Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed breathed his lost in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi.
Late Sayeed had identified the tourist spot all along the Bijbehara-Pahalgam road and asked Jammu and Kashmir Tourism department to develop them.
Excluding pilgrimage tourist spot of Hazratbal Khiram Dargah, Apple Tourist Resort at Chinni Wuder, Padshahi Bagh Park and Tourist Shopping Gallery at Bibehara were identified by the late Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed, however after his demise the department has virtually abandoned the projects and stopped the construction work.
Pilgrimage tourist spot of Hazratbal Khiram Dargah was identified and approved by former NC-Congress government and 80% construction was completed before late Mufti took over as Chief Minister of the state.
"Adequate funds were released for these projects but contractors have suspended work since the day when Mufti left this world," a Tourism official pleading anonymity said.
He revealed that late Mufti had set deadlines for these projects and was expected to inaugurate them before the beginning on summer tourism season.
At pilgrimage tourist spot of Hazratbal Khiram Dargah, the contractor has suspended the work and there is no visible progress. The same contractor, who was also allotted the contract of constructing a cafeteria (Apple Tourist Resort) and fifteen shops at Apple Valley Chini Wuder has abandoned the project and stopped constrictions work due to reasons best to known to him and the department.
Officails said that there no work going on other two projects- Padshahi Bagh Park and Tourist Shopping Gallery at Bibehara-from some time now.
Locals seeking Chief Minister's intervention, accused department of negligence. "After Mufti Sahab's demise neither tourism department bothered to visit these spots or the contractors who were tasked to complete the projects before the onset of tourism season," a group of locals told ET at Apple Valley- Chinni Wuder.
They asked department to resume construction work on the projects without any further delay.
The project cost of Apple Tourist Resort, Chinni Wuder, Pushkreeri was Rs 3.5 crore, while as the Tourist Shopping Gallery, opposite Padshahi Bagh will be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore.
When contacted, Director Tourism said that the work on project will resume after getting funds.
