Maharaja Hari Singh Park yet to see light of the day
Turns into garbage dump, breeding place for mosquitoes

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 19: Announced over seven years or so back by then chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the prestigious Maharaja Hari Singh Park on the bank of Tawi river, 60-70 mt off the Jewel-Smadhian link road, is yet to see light of the day. Courtesy: J&K government.
Due to the inordinate delay on part of the state government to develop it, the park land has virtually turned into a garbage dump.
The government, of which the so-called pro-Jammu BJP is an important component, has no justifiable reason to delay the project named after the last Dogra ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh. Once developed, the area would become green, adding to the beauty of Jammu city, but J&K government is showing least interest in developing this bald patch even when it had pledged to turn it into a park. It indeed is worrisome to note that the issue has so far remained neglected. It also shows government's non-seriousness towards making Jammu green at a time when the region is witnessing depletion of green patches due to varied reasons.
However, in official press notes and public statements of ministers and bureaucrats, the mood to develop bald state lands into green areas is full of optimism and the words are full of purpose, but in reality nothing is visible on the ground. In one such example, the Maharaja Hari Singh Park has become the victim of government apathy. No interest is being shown by the BJP-PDP Government to initiate any work on it as a result of which it has become a resting place for stray animals and a playground for children. Elderly people and drivers of cabs and other vehicles, who park their vehicles on the unused tube of the link road, that adjoins the proposed park, use the place to gossip and play cards. It does not at all give the look of a park from any angle.
It, however, surprises when the government announces new projects without completing the old ones which it has illogically abandoned for unknown reasons. A few months back, the government had announced 3-4 more golf courses for Jammu and a bridge for Basohli, but it perhaps forgot that it had also made a similar commitment with regard to the Hari Singh Park which is yet to see the light of the day. Given the fact that the government's words do not match its actions, the newly announced projects may also meet the fate of the proposed Hari Singh Park which exists on papers only.
Let the government not put the environment related issues on the back burner. Had the Hari Singh Park been developed, the beauty and fragrance of flowers and the landscape along Tawi river would have surely attracted many, but now, it is more a breeding place for mosquitoes. Foul smell emanates from there when the rain waters, that fill the pits on the proposed park land, become stagnant.
Let the government take requisite steps to develop the land into a park and stop it from gradually turning into a garbage dump and a place of unlawful activities.
