Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 19: While the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution department is surrounded by present controversy on ration scam the other important commodity which is almost missing is kerosene oil and that has compounded the controversy.
The tehsil Sunderbani in district Rajouri in this case is most affected as kerosene oil that comes on the depots in Rajouri is either diverted to the influential or sold on a heavy price to the truck drivers and owners while the general public is left devoid of it. This has created great resentment among the ration card holders of the district who lament that the depot owners do not give them kerosene oil as per the provisions contained in their ration cards.
The consumers from various areas of Sunderbani said that they have not received the kerosene oil this month. "It is unfortunate that the government is taking the people for a ride by non-supply of essential commodities," a consumer from a village said.
He said, "The kerosene which is fire wood alternative to cook food is being deprived to the consumers that open other corrupt options for them to cut down trees to use it as fire wood," A old consumer from the area said, "For last over two weeks I am visiting the local distribution depot to collect the kerosene. But every time I have to return empty handed."
The shortage is attributed to inadequate supply of oil allotted to the depot holders. Besides, the shopkeepers granted permission to sell kerosene oil at subsidized rates don't distribute the oil on regular basis. A depot operator in Sunderbani village said that since they get only 600 litres of kerosene oil in a month, it is difficult to ensure supply of all the families. Government has fixed five litres of oil per family.
He suggested that government should cancel the permits of those kerosene oil depot operators who don't get their allotted quota on regular basis.
Consumers facing the problem of shortage of kerosene oil, have no other option but to buy kerosene oil from the black marketers on exorbitant rates.
Admitting that there is black-marketing of Kerosene oil, he said truck drivers get the Kerosene oil on Jammu-Srinagar Highway and then sell it at higher rates.
No government official was available to comment on the black marketing of the kerosene oil in the area while the poor villagers are left at large without the essential commodity in Sunderbani.
