BARAMULLA, Apr 23: First time used European Technology Evotherm used for macadamization of roads in state has failed and the reasons could be many.
Sources said that during the first term of PDP- BJP government, the state administration had claimed that the latest technology used in the macadamization process of roads would provide sustainability of roads for a longer time, but that yielded negative results in a short span of less than six months.
"The authorities had used it on a trial basis. Since there was no harsh winter in Kashmir and the macadamization of roads has not only put the state in heavy financial loss. The dilapidated road leading from Choora to Kreeri Tehsil of north Kashmir continues to irk people and transporters at large," sources told Early Times.
Specific chemical was imported from outside, which has not yielded any positive results in Kashmir at maximum. Has the R&B department made responsible and accountable in their work culture, said sources.
Locals said that the road in their areas, especially the Choora-Kreeri was macadamized first time in past several years. They said the roads developed potholes which irk students and common masses all the time. Transporters and common masses alleged that there is a huge loss to the state exchequer and R&B department was not made answerable for the irresponsible work culture.
They alleged that the concerned officials failed to check the quality of material used in macadamisation of roads. They said otherwise road was macadamized in the month of December last year. "The contractors and the concerned department never paid heed to check the quality of the material. Their callous approach led to further dilapidation in the road condition and left the masses to suffer," said local residents.
Meanwhile, a senior official of R&B department said that, Evotherm is a chemical which is being used with the bitumen that allows it to maintain required temperature in cold weather till it gets mixed and laid on the roads.
"The evotherm may be defined as surfactant based chemical additive package which when added to the bitumen of 0.4- 5% will improve the lubricity of the binder with increase the workability of the mix," said the official.
Basically evotherm is a water-free Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology designed to allow the production and compaction of high quality asphalt pavements at temperatures 50 to 90ºF lower than conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA), the official said.
Defining more he said, "Evotherm WMA enables asphalt to coat aggregate at reduced temperatures while also lubricating the mix to improve workability and compaction."
