Early Times Report

Udhampur, Apr 25: Udhampur residents are battling with stray cattle menace as abandoned and unclaimed animals are roaming on the roads leading to disruption of traffic and even posing a serious threat to lives of people in certain cases.
The problem is felt most acutely around the Gole market , Mukherjee Bazaar Main Bazar , Ramnagar chowk , Slathia chowk , Dhar road and other markets in the city. The town hall road and slathia chowk remains the favoured haunt of the cattle to feed on the lush vegetable waste dumped all around the market.
Animals walking on main roads and dogs fighting have become a common sight in the city. Moreover, bulls locking horns in the middle of roads have been posing a serious threat to lives of passersby and commuters.
The night hours are the time, when the general public mostly confront the menace posed by these animals. The situation turns worse, when different parts of the city experience load shedding.
Local residents blame the absence of grazing areas and the greenery in the city limits for the free roaming of cattle in public places. Grazing areas have not been left out because of the conversion of agriculture fields into residential areas. With no grazing area in the city limits, there is no surprise at the presence of cattle on the main thoroughfares, says Ragav Sharma an social worker.
The dumping of garbage on the road sides on Junction main road, and the overflowing garbage bins in residential localities such as near CMO office and on court road , have proved happy hunting ground for animals. These animals converge here to rummage through the vegetable wastes dumped on the road sides.
Local residents alleged that the owners let out the animals after milking them. As owners happen to be influential people, the action is not taken against them. They also alleged that municipality totally fail to control the menace . They added that earlier the municipalities cattle pond was being run by local contractors and violaters were being penalized but from last from several years it is non functional as municipality to give contract to anyone . When contacted Municipality CEO said that no one is ready to take contract of cattle pond and they they run it on trial basis.
