jammu, Apr 25: In a bid to improve their showing in the All India Police Games in different disciplines, Jammu and Kashmir Police have devised a new strategy of achieving their objective without making any investment; in the process offering a raw deal to the budding sportsmen of the state.
It may be recalled that State Police had launched an ambitious sports policy that promised lucrative recruitment and career enhancement opportunities to the budding sportsmen of the state the previous year, but the same was shot down by the babus in Home department, whose clerical mindset failed to figure out any merit in it. The sports policy of the police, which has been lost in oblivion, promised fairly good avenues to sportsmen in recruitment and also assured attractive growth opportunities in their careers.
Confronting a complete policy paralysis for recruiting promising sports persons in its ranks who could bring laurels for it in the All India Police Games and national level championships, Police are attempting to woe budding sportsmen to join the force as SPOs, which many believe is a disgrace to the sports persons, who have invested so much to achieve a substantial level of performance.
The Notice issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters (ZPHQ) Jammu, issued under stamp and seal of the IGP IR on 20.4.2016 invites applications from sports persons in 15 disciplines for recruitment as SPOs. Interestingly, while the notice explains the terms and conditions of recruitment, it is silent on the emoluments payable to the sportsmen who are recruited. "It is strange that the notice is silent on remuneration and other facilities payable to sports persons who choose to join as SPOs" said an eminent sports person in Jammu. "This is an injustice to the budding sports persons to recruitment as SPOs, as they are lowly paid and have no job security. As police is one of the few organizations which can provide employment opportunities to promising sportsmen of the state, it is imperative that it has attractive recruitment policy that can bring in genuine sports persons" he added.
Sources in the Police organizations divulge that bosses want state Police to improve their showing in the interstate Police games, but are not ready to make any investments on their sportsmen. "There is no improvement in infrastructure for years, no incentives for the performers, no provision for skill orientation of Coaches and players, complete lack of policy on identification and nurturing of new talent and yet there is pressure on sportsmen to bring medals" said a retired Police officer, who represented state and J&K Police for decades, terming the initiative of recruitment of sports persons as SPOs as deceit.
