Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 25: Special judge anti-corruption, Jammu, A K Koul today awarded one year imprisonment to Sohail Mir, then patwari Halqa Seora who was facing trial in a corruption case. A complaint was lodged by one Deepak Chopra before SSP, vigilance organisation, Jammu, on February 16, 2010, stating therein that he had purchased a land measuring 3 kanals 12 marlas at Seora under khasra No 207. After he approached the patwari for attestation of mutation of land along with a photocopy of the sale deed and a treasury receipt, on his demand, he paid him Rs 5,000 as bribe. However, he later demanded Rs 13,000 more. Acting on the complaint, VO laid a trap and arrested him red handed while accepting the bribe money. The judge, after hearing the two sides, observed that only fair conclusion that could be drawn from the facts and legal position discussed above was that the charges against the accused had been proved to the hilt. The accused had failed to make out a plausible defence or even create a dent in the prosecution version, which could suffice to create a suspicion about the genuineness of the prosecution case and as such the court was left with no option but to hold him guilty for commission of offences under sections 5(1) (d) read with section 5(2) of P C Act and section 161 of RPC. With these observations, the court convicted him on both the charges and awarded him one year imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him.
