SRINAGAR, May 1: With hardly 12 days remaining for the holding of Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional courses in the state, the aspirants set to appear in the examination are at crossroads and fear the worse.
Following the Supreme Court directive that a single National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) should be held for the under-graduate medical courses, the students who are going to appear for entry into the MBBS course in medical colleges of Jammu and Srinagar are a worried lot. These students fear that their hard-work might go down the drain if the Supreme Court directive is applied in principle in the state.
Most of the aspirants feel that they since they receive their education under the pattern set out by Jammu & Kashmir State Board of School Education (JK BOSE) they would lose since the examination papers at the national level are set according to the guidelines set out by Central Board of School Education (CBSE).
"There is no harm in competing at the national level entrance test, but for that it is imperative that a level playing field is provided to the students of Jammu & Kashmir. Let the CBSE syllabus be taught to the students of the state and then the results of local students would be great at the national level," said Azra Shakeel, one of the aspirants.
It would be in place to mention here that CET would be held at different centres across the state on May 14 and 15. Thousands of candidates are set to take part in the examination. Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) has made it clear that the examinations would be held on schedule.
Meanwhile, the first phase of NEET was held today at different places of the country.
Many of the aspirants believe that NEET for a state like Jammu & Kashmir should be held at least two years later once the students are imparted education according to the CBSE pattern. They said that holding of NEET at this point of time would jeopardize career of thousands of bright students of the state.
"The Supreme Court should take a lenient view with respect to the holding of NEET across the country. The apex court should give ample time to the state governments in making the necessary adjustments since it concerns the career of lakhs of students. Let them first issue directions to the governments to implement CBSE syllabus in their respective states and then stress holding of NEET," said Mohammad Usman, an aspirant.
Jammu & Kashmir is not the only state which has raised question mark over the holding of NEET. Some other states like Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have also voiced concern over the holding of NEET. Some of the private institutions located in different parts of the country have also opposed the move.
Meanwhile, the state government is all set to knock at the doors of Supreme Court for seeking relaxation in the holding of NEET.
Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar said here that since Jammu & Kashmir enjoys special status under Article 370 the state cannot be forced to hold NEET. He said that since education falls under the concurrent list of subjects, both the state as well as central governments can make changes in the pattern of examination at any point of time.
"Previously the subject of education came under state list, but few years back it was clubbed under the concurrent list. As such both the state and central governments are authorized to make the changes in the subject as and when required. Since Jammu & Kashmir enjoys special status under Article 370 the same cannot be applied here," said Naeem.
