UN gives new lease of life to its obsolete resolution on kashmir
8/21/2016 9:51:17 PM
Though the UN has taken cognizance
of the killings in Kashmir, it has not,
at the same time, gone through the genesis of the turmoil. Was the killing of a militant commander, Burhan Wani, a sin? Was his killing done to incite people? Neither killing of Burhan Wani regional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, was a sin nor was it an attempt at inciting people to violence. Then why the turmoil swept the valley since July 8? In fact agencies across the LOC, extremists and the Army in P:akistan have been making attempts at derailing peace in Kashmir where the Assembly election was held peacefully in 2014 with maximum participation from the voters. Even the Lok Sabha election held in 2015 too witnessed heavy polling despite calls given by the separatists to boycott the Lok Sabha and the Assembly election. The state had a new guard in the shape of Mufti Mohd. Sayeed and after his demise his daughter Mehbooba was installed as Chief Minister. The process rather the transition from the father to the daughter was completed peacefully.
This seems to have bothered Pakistan, separatists and militants operating in the Kashmir valley. Yes, as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has inherent right to deplore the ongoing killings in Kashmir and urged India and Pakistan to settle Kashmir and other issues through dialogue."I stand ready to offer my good offices, should it be requested by both sides, to facilitate dialogue in order to achieve a negotiated settlement," he wrote in a letter he sent in response to a letter from Prime Minister, Pakistan Nawaz Sharif, apprising the UN chief about the deteriorating situation in Kashmir and the large-scale violations of human rights."I deplore the loss of life and hope that all efforts will be made to avoid further violence," the secretary-general reportedly said in his letter. In his letter of August 5, PM Nawaz called for efforts to end the persistent and egregious violation of the basic human rights of the Kashmiri people and also to implement the decades-old UN Security Council resolutions providing a framework for the settlement of Kashmir dispute through a plebiscite.
Well the UN Secretary General has viewed the story in Kashmir from one angle and that too the picture given by Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif. The UN Chief should have, first of all, sought a report from the Government of India and then make a comment. Whatever the UN chief has said seems to be a story based on one side the UN Chief is supposed to study some problem or issue objectively without taking sides. The UN Chief seems to have been carried away by Nawaz Sharif's letter. Ban ki-moon says that the UN was ready to intervene if it is requested by both India and Pakistan. This is one aspect when earlier, that too for y ears, the UN would be telling the world that the Kashmir issue should be settled through bilateral dialogue between India and Pakistan and there was no room for UN mediation or intervention. The UN Chief talks about the UN resolutions calling for a plebiscite and years ago the UN itself has said that its resolutions on Kashmir have become obsolete. Which story is correct. And the UN Chief would perform the role of a head of a world body if the UN forces Pakistan to accept India's suggestion for holding talks on t error and not Kashmir. Will Pakistan talk on terror without discussing Kashmir? No possibilities seem to be remote. Let the world body blame Pakistan for exporting terror to Jammu and Kashmir which has proved to be responsible for ongoing turmoil.
