Death toll reaches 68 as youth dies after being hit by teargas shell in downtown Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 21: The death toll in continued Kashmir violence reached 68 today after a youth was killed in the Malaratta area of the summer capital in the evening.
In the meantime normal life continued to be crippled on 44th consecutive day due to the imposition of curfew, restrictions and strike in the valley.
Reports said that a youth identified as Irfan Ahmad was hit by a teargas shell in the Malaratta area near Nowhatta in downtown Srinagar today in the evening. Irfan who was hit by the shell in his chest and sustained serious injuries was shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital thus taking the death toll to 68 in the continued Kashmir violence.
Reports said that personnel of Jammu & Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) fired scores of smoke shells on the protesters in the area after they came under intense stone pelting. The incident occurred while the police and CRPF personnel were withdrawing from the area after discharging their daily duties.
As soon as the news of Irfan's death spread groups of agitating people mostly comprising of youth came out and protested against his killing. Protests broke out in the Rajouri Kadal, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Kawdara, Bohri Kadal, Nawa Kadal, Fateh Kadal, Khanqahi Moulla and other adjacent areas. Police and CRPF lobbed smoke shells in order to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, reports said that dozens of persons were injured as clashes broke out between protesters and the security forces at various places in Kashmir valley. Reports said that 75 persons were injured at Behrampora village of Sopore after clashes broke out between Police, SOG and civilians.
Police and security forces resorted to teargas shelling and pellets to disperse protesters in the Behrampora village. Clashes broke out after protesters attacked police and SOG vehicles in the village. Out of the injured nine were referred to District Hospital Baramulla. Some people were injured when a marriage party was attacked by the security forces at Trumgund-Baramulla. A youth identified as Parvaiz Ahmed Naikoo was severely injured by pellets in his chest. He was shifted to SDH Kreeri for treatment.
At least two youth were injured in Anantang after clashes broke out between protesters and security forces. One of the injured youth who sustained injuries in his eye was referred to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar. Reports of protests have also come in from the other districts of South Kashmir. Some of the protesters sustained injuries during the clashes that carried out during the whole day. In the meantime, according to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters, Kashmir, three incidents of stone pelting were reported from Ganderbal and Sopore. The statement said that the stone pelting incidents were reported from Kangan in Ganderbal, Trumgund and Behrampora in Sopore. The miscreants assembled on roads and pelted stones on police and security forces, it said. The statement said that apart from these incidents, the situation remained under control across the valley. The restrictions under section 144/Cr PC remained in force in the valley. However, curfew was imposed in the Srinagar city, Anantnag town and Pampore, said the statement.
