Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 21: The security agencies are analyzing the pattern of protests in Kashmir to ascertain what is motivating a handful of youth to hit the streets in every area of the Valley.
Sources said that initial investigations have revealed that a section of youth belonging to a particular strata of the society are being paid Rs 500/ to Rs 1000/ per day while they are collecting food and other items on the name of relief.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "People who are the part of the ongoing unrest would never want normalcy to return as they are getting easy money and even food. Only 10 to 15 percent of people have got enough money to sustain. Remaining 85 percent are dependent on the private sector and they have been pushed to the wall and are at the verge of starvation."
He said, "People who are working in private sector cannot approach the mohalla committees to seek relief due their status and other considerations. Many private companies operating in Kashmir have stopped the salaries of their employees and have told them to report to the work after the shutdown and unrest end."
A Kashmir watcher said, "Recently a Kashmir based politician revealed that only five percent of Kashmiris are participating in the ongoing protest. His observation carries weight. The government employees are enjoying within the four walls of their house as they are getting their salaries on time. They are least bothered about what's going on in the streets. Labour class associated with construction business is also getting enough work as the non-local labourers have left Kashmir."
He said, "On the other hand business community owes lakhs to the financial institutions. If businessmen fail to pay their installments they would end up as defaulters and it would put them in soup. They have kept their fingers crossed and are waiting for the unrest to end soon."
"Only youth from particular strata of the society want unrest to continue. Besides these youth radical elements from hard-line groups are under pressure to ensure that normalcy doesn't return. These elements don't comprise for more than 5 to 10 percent of the society and they cannot take people hostage for a longtime."
He said the ongoing unrest has crippled the Kashmiris and their economy has
nosedived. "Police and security agencies have tightened their noose around the anti-national elements and the miscreants who have started believing that unrest is the best way to make easy money," said a source.
He said, "Police have almost finalized the list of the wanted stone pelters and miscreants in Kashmir. More than 500 youth have been arrested till date and efforts are on to trace the people who are behind these protests and have been instrumental in orchestrating rage on roads."
Sources said, "Besides Pakistan security agencies are also probing the possibility about the involvement of internal elements in the ongoing unrest. The accounts of separatists and a few others which have witnessed suspicious activities during the past two months are being also looked into."
