Valley shopkeepers on looting spree taking advantage of curfew, shutdowns

Srinagar, Aug 21: At a time when the valley is grappling with complex situation with no let up in curfew restrictions and daily shutdowns, shopkeepers pull up their shutters only to loot customers by selling essentials on extremely exorbitant rates.
Besides the truckers decision to halt supply of essentials to Kashmir valley and other provinces has added to the woes of commoners.
People in most city areas complained loot by shopkeepers saying things needed for daily use is being sold at high rates with the authorities not serious to actions against hoarders and black marketers taking undue advantage of the current unrest. "The moment situation turned a typical, shopkeepers started hoarding of essentials only to sell the same at their choicest prices with the commoner having no choice than to say yes, this is the height of the deceit,'' Muhammad Yaqoob Shah form Qamarwari told 'Early Times'.He said that the black marketers and hoarders did not even spared baby products essential for toddlers to sell on their choicest prices.
"Since the separatist groups spearheading the ongoing campaign in Kashmir valley, have been giving relaxation in strikes from 6pm till 6 amevery day, however the shopkeepers pull up their shutters only to loot customers with both hands," he added.
Another customer from Nowshera area of the city said that rice per quintal is being sold @ Rs 3000 to Rs 3500 per quintal while as government rate fixed for the same was Rs 2400. "People even in these trying times resort to loot, they have no fear of god in their hearts while as the government seems to be deep in slumbers to check the menace," he said.
He said potato per kilogram is being sold at Rs 40 while onion at 40 and tomato at Rs 60 per kilogram.
Milk per liter is sold at Rs 30 followed by oil at Rs 100 to 110 per liter. "This has become the daily routine of shopkeepers over the period of thirty to forty days in Kashmir valley," people allege .
The customers appealed the government to take some bold actions against these shopkeepers who have been looting general public with both hands.
