Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 28: First Additional Sessions Judge, Jammu, M A Chowdhary today awarded six years rigorous imprisonment to a narco-smuggler. Jagroop Singh alias Joopa, son of Babu Singh of Saddar Bazar, Akal Garh, in Rajkot district of Ludhiana, was apprehended by Nowabad police from a hotel in Rani Mandir area of Below Gumat on December 2, 2008 along with 25 kilograms of poppy. The court, after hearing the APP, observed that drug abuse had became a major problem in the society over the years. "Cases against drug peddlers indicate interstate and international drug rackets targeting cross sections of the society including school kids as well. The illicit drugs have a high addiction potential and there is a gradual increase in their intake, getting the users dependent on them both physically and psychologically. The compulsive drug seeking and use, on addiction, causes chronic brain disease changing the brain, its structure and how it works. The deadly menace, a major problem of the society, requires to be checked through strengthening the legal enforcement," the court observed. With these observations, the court awarded six years rigorous imprisonment to the accused and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. |
