Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 28: Senior Consultant - Neurosciences and stroke specialist from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Dr. PN Renjen told that 16-lakh cases of strokes are reported in India alone. Though people often stroke is associated with the elderly, but 10-30% of all strokes in India occur in people less than 45 years of age. Stroke kills more than 6 lakh Indians annually.
Addressing media persons, Dr. PN Renjen said that it is the second most common cause of death after cancer and heart disease come a close third for those who survive strokes. Almost 45% have to cope up with serious and permanent impairment. "Stroke kills brain cells due to a lack of oxygen to the brain and cause more disability in adults than any other disease. After a stroke some people cannot walk and have difficulty in vision or in speech, depending on what part of the brain was hit and how large an area has been affected, "Dr Renjen added. He further said about 77% of strokes are ischemic, that is, caused by a blockage in an artery leading to the brain. Another 21% are haemorrhagic caused by bleeding in the brain. Some strokes go unnoticed because they are short episodes lasting for a few hours. These are sometimes called stroke warnings or mini-strokes. As estimated, 30% of Indians who have TIA's go on to have a full-blown stroke within five years. Up to 80% of strokes can be preventable through lifestyle changes or drugs. Some risk factors, including personal or family history of the disease cannot be changed". Explaining its prevention and treatment, Dr Renjen added India could incur losses to the tune of $237 billion by 2020 due to a rise in lifestyle disorders like diabetes, stroke and cancer because of unhealthy workplace. By organizing health programmes at workplaces that addresses diet and physical activity in the workplace has the potential to improve the health status of workers.
Apollo Hospital provides state of the art facilities for the patients of stroke and has also initiated a special stroke package, Stroke Clinic, Stroke ICU and a dedicated Stroke Rehabilitation Programme. The department of Neurology has been regularly organizing Stroke Awareness Programmes on a monthly basis and by distributing stroke related literature to the general public.
