Old guards annoyed as PDP starts pampering 'bad guys'

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 12: Some of the senior leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party have taken a serious note of the "sudden and undue pampering" of their junior colleagues who don't have a "trust worthy" track record in PDP.
Sources said some in the PDP's top leadership have suddenly improved relationship with the lawmakers, who had been marginally "cut to size" following reports that "they planned a coup against the party president" after the death of the then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed earlier this year.
They said at least three such faces, who were believed to have opened a front against the party high command were not given any ministerial berth in the Cabinet sworn in with Mehbooba Mufti as the Chief Minister.
"This group was even kept away from meetings held to decide on matters of critical importance. But what has happened now is that the same untrustworthy faces are getting importance again and are called by the party leadership in decision-making whereas old guards are being sidelined as if they hold no value," said some party insiders pleading anonymity.
They said a major reason behind the change in party stand was that it apprehends that such faces would follow footsteps of Tariq Hameed Karra, who last month resigned from the party and his seat in the Parliament.
"Basically in a bid to regain importance in the party, these untrustworthy MLAs spread a rumor that having been sidelined they too would resign from the party sooner than later," said a party leader.
He said the trick worked as the party leadership fell into their trap. "Apprehending their exit from the party, the leadership has started being over responsive towards such faces and this is just not in accordance with the ethics of the party," the insiders said.
They said some of the veterans, mainly from south Kashmir, considered PDP stronghold, have taken serious note of change in attitude of the party leadership.
"This is not setting a good precedence that those who stood by the party through the thick and thin are sidelined whereas those, who were working for vested interests enjoy more respect and power," said a senior PDP leader.
He said some of the senior leaders have been disheartened and that they would pick up the matter with the party leadership before the closure of Darbar offices on October 27.
"We don't want to fuel misunderstanding in this party, so we will discuss the matter threadbare," he added.
