Conflicting views on Presidential rule in J&K
11/16/2018 8:58:45 PM
Yes Omar Abdullah is right when he tells BJP not to expect a walkover in the Assembly elections. In fact the party General Secretary, Ram Madhav, took the lid off from a Pandora's box when he ruled out the state of Jammu and Kashmir being placed under the President's rule. While the Governor had hinted at recommending dissolution of the Assembly and the state being placed under President's rule Ram Madhav has stated that there is enough time for debating on the issue. Well under the state Constitution Governor's rule cannot be extended beyond six months and the BJP and the Peoples' Conference has so long failed to cobble up a coalition Government. Sajjad Lone had been promised to head the Government but he too failed to reach a 44 figure in the House. The BJP has 25 and it had expected an open revolt in the PDP but when only five members of the House resigned Sajjad-and the BJP failed to form the Government.
The former chief minister and National Conference (NC) vice president, Omar Abdullah has asked BJP leader Ram Madhav not to expect walkover in Legislative Assembly polls. Reacting to a statement of BJP General Secretary, Ram Madhav asking NC and PDP to clear whether they would be contesting the Assembly polls, Omar in a series of tweets said, "You got the control of a handful of towns and cities because NC and PDP stayed away and Congress did such a poor job of putting up a fight, do you really think that NC and PDP will give a walkover in the assembly polls."
He said that was sensible on part of Madhav to clear the air about government formation in the State.
This indicates that both the National Conference and the PDP have plans of contesting the ensuing Assembly elections. Dr Farooq Abdullah had, in a fit of anger, stated that his party may not contest any elections, Assembly or Lok Sabha. Here his son has discounted his father's theory. It is so because the National Conference cannot sit idle and avoid contesting the elections which would mean that the NC may not regain power. If the NC contests the elections it may surprise viewers when the NC and the Congress may defeat the BJP. And on the basis of its performance when it was a partner to the coalition Government may not allow the BJP to win more than 10 seats against 25 in 2014. Despite the fact that Omar berates middlemen and power hungry people the formation of the BJP led Government is not possible.
