Councilors protest against lack of facilities during training | | | S T Haq Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 1: Municipal councilors from Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Tuesday staged a protest in press enclave, Srinagar against the government authorities for not being able to provide the necessary facilities and security during their training programme in Srinagar. According to sources scores of the councilors from various areas of the Kupwara district, led by President Municipal Committee, Handwara, assembled at press colony shouting slogans in favour of their demands. The protesting councilors said that a three-day training programme for the municipal councilors of all the districts of Kashmir was launched by the government at Institute of Management, Public Administration & Rural Development (IMPA) a month ago, but during the training, the councilors had to face many problems as no facilities were provided, said sources. "There was no accommodation for any of us, no transportation and other promised facilities for which the government had provided funds," said a protesting councilor from Handwara. The furious councilors added that they all were left on roads till 9:00 PM, as there was no accommodation or transport facility available for them. "We are ready to work for the benefit of people but not at the cost of our security", said a female councilor from Handwara. The president added that despite repeated requests to the Divisional Commissioner and additional commissioner to look into the matter, there were no initiatives taken by them which ultimately led us to hit the streets. The councilors threatened to resign from their jobs if their demands were not met. Pertinently, sources had said in the recent past that there are various councilors and other ward members who had alleged that they are lacking of funds due to which the development is not taking place in their respective MCs across the Kashmir valley. The councilors, chairman and other staff members cannot even do the work of sanitation; construction of drains in various towns has remained hanged, while as the shifting of garbage from roads including major lanes and by lanes is pending from past few months, said sources. They said that people had great expectations from the newly elected chairmen, councilors and other ward members, but government has failed to provide them the funds that are required for the development of their Municipal Councils and Committees in their districts. |
