First time official: only 2.5 lakh troops in J&K
2/3/2008 10:32:55 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 3 An aggressive reaction from the Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti notwithstanding, the Governor SK Sinha has done a great deal of transparency by telling the world that how many troops actually stand in Jammu and Kashmir. While in conflict situations no country would share its operational strength and troop position, but the numbers of soldiers operating in Jammu and Kashmir have always been a guess work. The central government and defence authorities choosing to be silent on the figures, the rights groups and the separatists have always declared their own assessment of exaggeration. Over the past decade and half, the guess work on troop strength has ranged from six and half lakhs to 12 lakhs. The separatists and various rights groups have often claimed that five troops are stationed in Kashmir alone. This they would say was excluding the strength of paramilitary forces and the local Jammu and Kashmir Police. The government in his republic day message had said that the ratio of deployment of forces, including army and paramilita...

2/3/2008 10:32:19 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 3 Leaving the agenda unfinished after being trounced by the opposition on the floor of the House, the government is considering options of holding a short duration session to pass important legislations. Before being adjourned sine die on January 30, ten days ahead of the schedule, the legislative assembly in its this session could have only 17 sittings. PDP shares state politics with PM
2/3/2008 10:28:22 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu |Feb 3 Amidst a season tumultuous politics and boomeranging corruption crusade, the Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti today called on the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprised him of the latest political developments in Jammu and Kashmir. Mehbooba’s meeting with the Prime Minister assumes huge significance in the prevailing political atmosphere in the state. No wonder that a PDP press note about Mehbooba’s meeting with the Prime Minister carefully mentioned at the end that “Mehbooba discussed in detail the political scenario and the State's developmental issues with the Prime Minister. The functioning of the Coalition Government in the State a...

Says, elements of corruption have pooled resources against CM
2/3/2008 10:27:44 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu | Feb 3 When two Ministers of the Peoples Democratic Party fell in the line of fire from opposition for their alleged role in the forest scam, the Chief Minister made all efforts to protect them –at least for stability of his coalition or as a matter of courtesy to the coalition partner. However, the pointing fingers have been raised on the Chief Minister –though vehemently denied by him –the not only the partner Peoples Democratic Party but also his own Congress party is watching from the bay. When the television news channel aired a story full of suspicion dragging Chief Minister into the Forest murk alleging that he favoured his brothers, the war against co...

66 % plan works still incomplete
Advanced budget session fails to serve purpose
2/3/2008 10:26:49 PM
Early Times Reporter Jammu| Feb 3 Despite advancing the budget session for over two months consecutively for two years, no lessons appear to have been learnt except catching big headlines that “Jammu and Kashmir has set a new precedence”. It may sound shocking –only 34 per cent achievements have been registered in the current financial year so far, which closes on March 31, 2008. For two consecutive years, the coalition government has been claiming that advancing of budget session will introduce a regime of efficiency and timely completion of works. However, as per a document of Finance department has been learnt that only 34 per cent of the total works envisaged under the plan outlay...
