Bangladesh terror group recruits J&K-bound ultras
7/31/2006 7:37:45 PM
B L KAK NEW DELHI, JULY 31: Harkat-ul-Jihad Islam (HUJI), a Bangladesh-specific terror group, has, in recent times, recruited hundreds of young Muslim fanatics for assisting their co-religionists in Kashmir in the "struggle for freedom from India". Bangladesh, according to classified intelligence inputs, hosts nearly 300 terrorist camps, many of them transplanted by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Statistics available with the Union Home Ministry say that the Border Security Force (BSF) nabed at least 32 border-crossing militants in 2005 and at least a dozen this year. The ISI operatives in the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers across the international border in Jammu sector, these intelligence inputs reveal, have put positioned trained and armed Bangladeshi militants at as many as 15 places across the border for being pushed into the Indian territory in twos and threes. A senior intelligence specialist told EARLY TIMES that Dhaka's willingnes to join hands with India to fight terror "is not expected to brin...

Jaswant's tale of 'mole' puts BJP in a hole
7/31/2006 7:37:12 PM
B L KAK NEW DELHI, JULY 31: The BJP stalwart and former Union Minister, Jaswant Singh, has maintained enigmatic silence over the identity of the 'mole' in the Prime Minister's Ofice (PMO) during the PV Narasimha Rao government. One day he insisted that he would divulge the information to the present Prime Minister alone. Next Day he came out with a story for the media that he had communicated to Manmohan Singh identity of the 'mole'. And the day that followed had only moments of embarrassment for both Jaswant Singh and his BJP. With the official disclosure on Sunday, July 30, that Jaswant Singh had not, in his letter to the Prime Minister, named the spy, the embarrasment fo...

Delhi's Pak policy unnerves Kashmir
7/31/2006 7:16:00 PM
NEW DELHI, JULY 31: While New Delhi is planning to get tough with Islamabad in the wake of the July 11 Mumbai blasts, almost all political parties in Kashmir are showing nerves over the possible consequences of such a course. Even mainstream parties like the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) believe that the India-Pakistan standoff will further shrink the "political and democratic space" in the state, which, according to them was limping back to normalcy since 2003. "All the gains scored by India after the 2002 assembly elections will be lost if India and Pakistan go back to square one," a mainstream Kashmiri leader said. Kashmiri leaders do not think the deci...

New Delhi, July 31: Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba is planning to carry out some strikes on critical infrastructure, military targets and religious places, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee informed the Lok Sabha on Monday. "It has been evident for some time now that the scope of such terrorist activities is on the increase," he said responding to concerns voiced by BJP Deputy Leader V K Malhotra. Information with security agencies also indicates the possibility of a nuclear installation being considered for strike by the LeT module, he said. "A series of special security measures have already been taken, and some are under consideration to prevent any such attempts...

7/31/2006 7:03:02 PM

HM CHIEF MAINTAINIG A MEANINGFUL SILENCE
7/31/2006 7:01:49 PM
Srinagar, July 31 : The Muzaffarabad based United Jehad Council has seemingly been on the defensive after its chairman Syed Salahuddin, adopted a meaningful silence during the last over one month. According to the watchers of the separatist camp, Mr Salahuddin has not been seen issuing any statement or suggestions on the ongoing activities of militants in Jammu and Kashmir. These watchers attribute his silence to the division of opinion in Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. While one section in the rebel camp is for participation in the dialogue with the Government of India the other faction is for continued Jehad for the liberation of Kashmir. Informed sources said that Mr Salah...
