Making a strong case or the demands of the state in Information and Broadcasting sector, Jammu and Kashmir today sought extension of community radio facility to the universities in the state even as it supported the central government initiative to bring a draft broadcast regulatory bill in the parliament.
Addressing the 26th meeting of Information Ministers (SIMCON) here today, Minister for Power, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora who represented the state on behalf of Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad, asked for studying the Dr. Swaminathan Foundation model of community radio to make it far more result oriented before making a policy draft on the subject. Director Information, Mr. Zaffar Ahmad in the deliberations of the conference, assisted Mr. Jora.
Supporting the central government’s initiative regarding the broadcast regulatory bill, Mr. Jora opined that there is a need to overhaul the existing legal regime regarding the regulation of broadcast content and cable television. A unique survey to ascertain the number of people living below poverty line and without any substantial employment has begun in all including eight newly created districts.
According to the official sources, the survey will help in formulating an effective planning and employment program. "Once the needs and problems are identified, the planning tools can be made effective", said the planning department officials. Ahead of the next assembly elections and the guesswork on possibility of electoral alliance, all eyes are now focused on the actions of Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress in the Poonch constituency which may shortly go to the polls.
