Mufti worried over rising bellicose diplomatic tones
9/9/2009 12:36:23 AM
Early Times Report Srinagar Sept 8: Worried over the bellicosity in diplomatic channels, former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party patron has once again reminded the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh of his commitments on peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to the grim revival of apparent cold war rhetoric across diplomatic channels, Mufti said “this depressingly evolving situation not only belied hopes of the millions in the two countries rooting for peace and friendship but had already started casting its dark shadows on J&K”. The former Chief Minister was addressing a party convention in north Kashmir township of Baramulla. Urging the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to take bold action to arrest the drift in Indo Pak relations, Mufti said the worries about rising tensions were the highest in J&K for obvious reasons. He said he had been repeatedly cautioning about the fragility of peace in absence of sincere and purposeful measures to carry forward the peace process in all its dimensions. He said the recently reported violations on the LOC and the warni...

The day when Sheikh died
9/9/2009 12:35:45 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 8: Around 7.25 P.M on September 8,1982 when a news bulletin from Radio Kashmir announced the demise of Sheikh Abdullah, the then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir shopkeepers downed their shutters in the entire Residency Road and Lal Chowk area. Large groups of people started trekking towards the residence of the Lion of Kashmir. Most of the women were seen wailing and weeping. It was chaos and confusion in Srinagar. Confusion compounded when the same Radio Kashmir started broadcasting, repeatedly, that Sheikh Abdullah was alive. The Government spokesman denied the UNI report that Sheikh Abdullah had died. Soon after the UNI disclosure that Sheikh Abdu...

No peace until culprits brought to book
9/9/2009 12:35:13 AM
Early Times Report; Shopian, Sept 8: In his visit to Shopian after months of crises over double rape and murder and a blind investigation yielding no results, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today found a sizeable audience and declared that there is no personal peace for him till the culprits were brought to book. “We don’t hang (as permitted by law) people in Jammu and Kashmir but I personally prefer recommending the extreme punishment for the culprits responsible for taking away lives of Nelofar and Asiya”, Omar said at Kreva Zora village and reiterated that the government would put in every effort and employ any agency to dig out the truth and punish the criminals behind the murder o...

China’s Intentions II An Early Times Special
ABID SHAH9/9/2009 12:34:08 AM
New Delhi, Sept 8: Over 48 hours after the discovery of China bound arms and ammunition at Kolkata airport in a UAE aircraft, Indian officials do not know as to what to do with it. Sent into a tizzy by the bizarre discovery with a clear Chinese link amid reports of frequent intrusions by Chinese forces in Ladakh, the External Affairs Ministry, just maintains that the aircraft and the crew are being detained as “investigations are on” whereas UAE points a “technical mistake” on the part of the captain of the plane. Sadly at the same time, the Minister, Mr SM Krishna, as also his lieutenant, Mr Shashi Tharoor, are themselves mired in the controversy over their stay in five star hotels for pa...

He stood solidly for accession to India
Sant Kumar Sharma9/9/2009 12:33:00 AM
Jammu, September 8, 2009: Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah died today 27 years ago in Srinagar. In 1948, on February 5, he made a historical speech in the United Nations Security Council, in its meeting defending the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India. Sheikh also made several other points about his relationship with Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Pakistan and the Muslim Conference in his speech. Some excerpts from that speech, reproduced hereunder verbatim, make it clear to us what Sher-i-Kashmir stood for. … Today Pakistan has become the champion of our liberty. I know very well that in 1946, when I raised the cry of "Quit Kashmir," the leader of the Pakistan Government, who is the ...

Empowering people taking little longer
9/9/2009 12:32:14 AM
Early Times Report: Jammu, Sept 8: Between change of regimes thrice in nine years and change of faces at the helm of affairs as many times, one lofty promise that parties made on sharing a bit of power with the people still continues to be like chasing a dream. Hesitation of the political elite on democratic decentralization of powers to the grassroots has remained a chronic problem in Jammu and Kashmir and the current year also there are no signs of having the Panchayat elections around. Ironically, the delay in holding Panchayat elections is despite the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is annually loosing more than Rs 500 Crore central assistance as there are on democratically elected bodi...
