4 years imprisonment, fine Rs 20,000 to Branch Post Master
Misappropriation of depositors' money

Jammu, Sept 19 (JNF): Principal Sessions Judge Udhampur AK Koul today awarded four years imprisonment and fine Rs 20,000 to then Branch Post-Master Onkar Singh S/O Dina Nath,R/O Nallah Gorian Tehsil Ramnagar who during his posting as Branch Post Master Nallah Gorian misappropriated the money which were deposited by the depositors.
According to the police case that a complaint was lodged by Superintendent of Post Offices Udhampur Division, November 6, 2003 and in the report it was submitted that the accused Onkar Singh, while being posted as Branch Post Master Nallah Gorian, Branch office received Rs.10,000/- each from Puran Chand , Miss Sushma Devi and Shanker Dass for deposit in time deposit accounts and he made the entries in MSY (Mahila Samridhi Yojna ) pass books instead of prescribed pass books and thereafter allotted fictitious account numbers to the pass books and did not credit the amount to Government account and rather misappropriated the same. The accused was ultimately found to have committed offences u/s 409/420/467/468/471 RPC and after completion of investigation presented challan in the Court.
While awarding sentence Principal Sessions Judge Udhampur AK Koul after hearing Public Prosecutor Navneet Gupta for the state whereas Advocate ID Sharma appearing for the accused observed that accused while being posted as a public servant, was entrusted with money by the public for investment but the accused breached the trust and mis appropriated the money . So while convicting the accused u/ss 409/420 RPC Court sentence him to imprisonment for two years and a fine of Rs.10,000/- for each of the offences referred to above . In case of default in payment of fine he would undergo a further imprisonment for two months. The sentences would run concurrently. The accused is on bail which was cancelled. He shall be taken in custody and sent to District Jail Udhampur to serve the sentence.
