Congress speaks language of separatists
Causing Affront To Jammu's Self-Respect

JAMMU, Sept 19: The Indian nation is very strong. It is not afraid of Pakistan, or even China. Nor is it afraid of Kashmiri separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and others of their ilk. It has comprehensively defeated Pakistan in the past four times and it will defeat it again as and when required. The nation's problem is the Kashmiri leaders, who call themselves "mainstream" politicians but miss no opportunity to subvert the polity both from within and outside in their desperate bid to get the State out of the political and Constitutional organization of India.
Some of them demand autonomy. Some of them demand self- rule. And some of them say autonomy or self-rule cannot "solve Kashmir dispute" and shamelessly assert that no solution would be workable unless it has the backing and approval of separatists. They also, like the votaries of Autonomy and self-rule, contemptuously dismiss as "communal" and "divisive" those who believe in the unity and integrity of India and demand parity between Jammu and Kashmir and other States of the Union or demand abrogation of the outdated, communal, separatist and discriminatory Article 370. In the process, they cause a deliberate affront to the self-respect of the people of Jammu Pradesh and Ladakh region, which house religiously committed nationalists.
It may appear ridiculous and far-fetched, but it is a fact that the real danger to India and its Jammu & Kashmir is not even from the protagonists of autonomy and self-rule. The real danger is from certain Congress leaders. It is they who have been giving legitimacy one way or the other to the votaries of autonomy and self-rule, who otherwise could have been tackled long back. It is the Congress that has helped fissiparous tendencies to grow and assume alarming proportions in Jammu & Kashmir and elsewhere in the country, including Punjab, which played crucial and splendid role during freedom struggle and made supreme sacrifices. It is not an exaggeration. It is a statement of fact. There is no need to dig the past to determine the role of the Congress in the rise of separatism in Kashmir. Even a superficial look at what a senior Congress leader and former Cabinet Minister, who is also an Azad loyalist, said yesterday at Kangan in Ganderbal district, Kashmir, while addressing a public meeting. He was none other than Abdul Gani Vakil, who speaks two languages, one in Kashmir and another in Jammu.
Vakil, one of the most vocal Kashmir-based Congress leaders, among other things, said: "Neither a self-rule proposal of the People's Democratic Party nor autonomy of National Conference can resolve Kashmir issue.' They have to understand that Kashmir issue can only be resolved when all the parties, including separatists, sit together. The resolution of Kashmir issue is enshrined in collective wisdom of the parties concerned, a criterion which the self-rule or autonomy proposal does not fulfill. The Congress will not allow anybody to use Kashmir issue to change the fortunes or misfortunes of political exploiters. 'Kashmir issue cannot be treated as commodity on which dirty politics can be played'. Article 370 is to be strengthened and those communal forces bent upon dividing the State are to be kept at bay. 'Divisive forces seeking abrogation of Art 370 are enemies of the State'. Significance of Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir is (that it is) associated with State's peace and prosperity".
What Vakil said was what Kashmiri separatists had been saying since decades. Here lies the fundamental problem - problem which is difficult to surmount because New Delhi's approach has been no different. What the Manmohan Singh- led and Sonia Gandhi-dominated UPA Government has been doing in Kashmir since May 2004 and elsewhere in the country is too well-known, and hence, to need to report it.
