What has coalition Govt achieved? | Autopsy of official claims | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 19: The National Conference led Government issues statements on a daily basis. Besides washing dirty linen in public, the Government more often than not boasts of its achievements. However, an autopsy of the achievements and statements reflects its failure almost on every front. The Government boasts of holding Panchayat elections, passing the Public Service Guarantee Act, the RTI, upholding the press freedom and above all announcing the Sher-e-Kashmir Employment Package. Well as far as Panchayat elections are concerned, the hollowness of the exercise has started dawning on the people. Around 500 members have already resigned in Kashmir valley alone. The members elsewhere in the State are equally dismayed. At some of the places the Panches and Sarpanches have decided to contest Assembly elections to teach the Government a lesson. As many as 25 attacks on the Fourth Estate were recorded during the past three years. Omar was told to refrain from using force against scribes by the Press Council of India Chairman. In his letter, the chairman expressed dismay over what he called use of force against journalists while performing professional duties. This is not an ordinary letter. It reflects Government's failure to allow Fourth Estate to flourish. The RTI was also diluted recently. The Government was scared of sharing vital information with the people. The Government promised speedy disposal of applications seeking ration cards, driving licenses, State Subject Certificates and stuff like that under Public Service Guarantee Act. However, the new legislation has not made any difference on the ground, at least not till date. Corruption is rampant. The aam aadmi beats his head over the state of affairs in various departments. What else can he do? The record at the human rights front is equally disturbing and can be gauged from the fact that the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has been asked not to investigate a matter of grave concern. Embarrassed by its stand on mass graves, the Government said the matter shall now be taken up by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). But, the TRC has not been formed yet. On the developmental front nothing is visible on the ground. Omar described Srinagar as face of Jammu Kashmir. But the dilapidated roads and drains of the summer capital reflects the failure of the Government. The former Union Home Minister enquired about the condition of roads in downtown Srinagar during his visit. He was told that the turmoil was a stumbling block in undertaking developmental activities. The same Government swears by the normality of Kashmir and even sends its Ministers to US, Canada, Japan and Israel to woo foreign tourists. |
