PDP, BJYM protest 'anti-people' reforms in Jammu | | | early times report Jammu, Sept 19 : Political outfits on Wednesday protested against the Centre's decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail sector and the recent hike in diesel prices here. Activists of the youth wing of Jammu and Kashmir's People's Democratic Party (PDP) took to the streets and raised slogans against the UPA government, and termed its twin reforms 'anti common man'. Vikramjit Singh, president of the PDP youth wing demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh over the 'anti people' reforms. "We condemn the United Progressive Alliance government which is formulating wrong economic policies as they are trying to divert the minds of the people. They are leaving no stone unturned in sucking the common man's blood. We condemn this act. If they can't take decisions for the common man, the Central government must quit. If they want to continue to be in power, they have to work for the people and provide relief to the common man," Singh said. Meanwhile, activists of the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also held protests in the city over the alleged wrongful allocations of coal blocks. The activists raised slogans and marched to the Pacca Danga Police Station to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, holding him directly responsible for the coal scam. "We have come here to lodge an FIR against Prime Minister, who is completely involved in the coal scam and now has an image as black as coal. Such a man is leading the country; this is an embarrassment for the nation," Munish Sharma, BJP's youth wing president, said. The suspected 'Coalgate' affair washed out the monsoon session of parliament after India's apex auditing body, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said the under-priced sales of coalfields may have cost the exchequer a cumulative loss of Rs. 1.86 lakh crore. The BJP is demanding the resignation of Dr. Singh, who was Coal Minister between 2006 and 2009, when many of the sales were executed. Earlier on Friday, the central cabinet had raised retail prices of diesel by about 14 percent per litre and imposed restrictions on sale of subsidised cooking gas cylinders to six per household annually. A day later, the government gave its nod to FDI in retail sector, causing widespread political furore. In kathua, today a large number of women (House wives) took out a major procession to lodge their protest against the UPA's recent move for providing the six LPG cylinders in a year for domestic use and demanded to increase the limit of LPG cylinder from 6 to 12 in a year.
