NC haunted by possible repeat of 1977 situation in J & K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Sept 19: The political arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir, soon after the 2008 Assembly election, may face immediate impact in case the Congress led Government in the centre lost its majority in the Lok Sabha forcing it to quit. The situation, bordering on uncertainty in the centre, is the result of TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister, decision to pull out of the Government. Since TMC has 18 members in the parliament its withdrawal has reduced the Congress led UPA Government to a minority. Though its survival still depends on the support of the Samajwadi Party and the BSP If the two decide to lend support from outside the Congress led UPA Government is safe. Already the NC leadership is apprehensive of the role the state unit of the Congress is likely to play if the Manmohan Singh Government resigns. The NC leadership is haunted by fears because of its experience of 1977 when the Congress lost power in the centre its state unit immediately wrote to the then Governor, L K Jha ,informing him about its decision to withdraw support to the Government headed by Sheikh Abdullah. Interestingly, the Sheikh had regained power a 22 years in political wilderness with the support of the Congress. However, Jha accepted the recommendations of Sheikh Abdullah and dissolved the state Assembly paving way for fresh elections. And in the 1977 Assembly elections the NC mauled the Congress and the Janata Party. At that stage the leaders of the state unit of the Congress had hoped that being the largest single party in the Assembly it would be invited by Jha to form the Government. At that stage the Congress supremo, Indira Gandhi, who had been rocked and rattled by the political event, shaping into an anti-Congress storm, was so much disinterested in Kashmir politics that she left it to the state party leaders to decide on the next course. This time also the congress leaders feel belittled by the actions and behaviour of the NC leadership, particularly by Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, and they may not miss an opportunity, if it is available, by settling scores with Omar.
