Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 25: University of Jammu (JU) in collaboration with the J&K State Council for Science and Technology, DST (GOI) organized a one day awareness workshop cum brainstorming session/ awareness workshop for developing and identifying location specific Research and Development and demonstration project for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. In his inaugural address, Prof. Mohan Paul .Singh Ishar, who was Chief Guest on the occasion lauded the efforts of faculty of science in organizing a programme of such magnitude and importance which touches the economic and social upliftment of these marginalized groups. Prof. Rekha Choudhary, Dean Research Studies, University of Jammu said that the topic was of relevance as these people are left behind in the developmental process. She said that SC/ST up to 8 % of total population while in Jammu itself, the percentage reaches up to 18 %. In some areas, SC/ST population is even denser up to 70-80 % of the total population. Prof. S.K.Khosa, Dean Faculty of sciences, University of Jammu, while dwelling upon the theme, said that the universities have important role to play in the development of weaker sections of the society. Prof. Neeru Sharma, HOD Home Science, University of Jammu in her welcome address said that the initiatives drawn from the session would help in the upliftment of indigenous people. There were six invited speakers from the DST (GOI),State Departments of Planning and Industry, SC/ST and BC Board, NEILIT, and University of Jammu. Er. Ravinder Gaur, Scientist & MS,Deptt. of Science and Technology, DST(GOI) , K K Bhagat, J&K SC/ST Comm., Prof. G.M.Bhat, HOD Geology, University of Jammu; Hari Dutt, Joint Director, Planning Jammu, Atul Gupta ,AD, Industries, Jammu; Susheel Kumar Gabgotra, Joint Director, NEILIT were the key speakers in this session, Among others Prof. Neelam Saraf, Dean Academic Affairs; Prof. GM Bhat, Head, Deptt of Geology; Prof. MK Dhar, Controller of Examinations;Prof Jasbir Singh, Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee were also present on the occasion. |
