KISHTWAR, Sept 25: Kishtwar is again in news for a bad reason. This time a 7th standard student has been awarded corporeal punishment by his teacher.
According to reports, Jatin Kumar student of 7th class at Adarsh Balniketan High School Kishtwar alleged that his teacher Rajpal checked his nails and gave him a sound thrashing allegedly for keeping his nails unclean.
Jatin, reports said fell unconscious for quite some time. The fellow students reported the matter to other teachers who instead of rushing him to the hospital sent him home.
At home, he informed his parents about the incident and also complained of pain in the neck. His father, reports said rushed him to hospital where the doctors found injuries in his soft tissues. Jatin said the erring teacher awards corporeal punishment on minor mistakes.
His father, Niranjan Sharma, took strong note of the incident "The teacher has a right to punish the ward if he is slow in studies but the punishment should not be severe. It should not put the student to risk", he said.
He said when he approached the school authorities, they did not show any remorse. "Instead they supported corporeal punishment. They even justified their decision to send Jatin home instead of the hospital", he said.
Meanwhile, the accused teacher denied the allegations." During a routine examination, Jatin's nails were found dirty. I managed a nail cutter and trimmed his nails. I slapped him twice on the back and this in no means was life threatening", he said.
He said he had been serving the school for 25 years and nobody had registered a complaint against him. Principal of the school Roshan Lal Sen while defending his teacher said that the incident took place in front of him. "He was given minor punishment. And soon after, the said teacher trimmed his nails. Jatin might have felt nervous."
The principal, however, advised the teachers to maintain their cool in future.
