Rahul for empowerment of J-K panchayats
CWC Meeting
9/25/2012 11:58:13 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 25: "Crucial" Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting was held today at 10 Janpath, official resident of AICC president Sonia Gandhi. There were reports that the CWC would - apart from discussing issues like formation of Telangana, elevation of Rahul Gandhi in the party and a Cabinet reshuffle - make its stand public on the Congress-led Union Government's recent economic decisions, including what are termed as "unpopular and anti-people decisions" on diesel price, subsidized LPG cylinders and FDI in multi-brand retail trade. The meeting took place for more than 90 minutes.
After the meeting was over, chairman of Congress media cell Janardhan Dwivedi informed media persons as to what transpired during the meeting chaired by Sonia Gandhi and attended, among others, by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and AICC general secretary and Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi. He said the CWC endorsed without any reservation all the three economic decisions taken last week, that Chidambaram told the members that "if the economy is not stable then relief programmes for the poor will not be possible" and that "the value of the rupee should not fall further and investments should be encouraged". He also said there was no discussion on issues like formation of Telangana, elevation of Rahul Gandhi in the party and a Cabinet reshuffle.
According to some insiders, "none of the Congress leaders at the meeting voiced any opposition to the decisions, but listened to the Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh gives them an explanation on why they are needed and their importance". This is significant. This should dispel the impression that the Congress was not for tough and anti-people economic decisions. The refrain of the Prime Minister and Finance Minister was that "the welfare schemes of the Congress would be in peril in the event that the economy's growth failed to continue or stumbled on account of factors that are affecting the global economy". It is now more than clear that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his coterie would take some more harsh economic decisions in the coming days to fleece common people. In other words, the poor and middle class people are in for more shocks.
As mentioned, Rahul Gandhi was also present in the meeting. When asked about Rahul Gandhi's intervention in the meeting, Dwivedi said: "He only talked about Jammu and Kashmir". Elaborating further, Dwivedi said: "Rahul Gandhi is not happy because the State Government has not empowered the elected panchayats. Sarpanches and Panches are being targeted by extremists; this is a cause of concern. Rahul urged those present in the meeting to take note of these sad developments as well as failure of the State Government to empower panchayats and do something in the matter".
If one goes by what Dwivedi said about Rahul Gandhi's suggestions, then it can be said that the latter was not happy with the State Government, headed by Omar Abdullah. But more than that, it indicated the level of helplessness of the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi, who like his mother, indirectly controls the Union Government and has direct control over the organization, in fact, admitted that the Congress had no say in the matters of governance. It is strange that Rahul, who rules the roost in New Delhi and whose party is part of the State Government, had to raise the issue of empowerment of panchayats in the CWC meeting. It appears that the Congress has abdicated its authority in the State in favour of the NC.
