Why did Mufti allow free use of internet?
`Ban on FB, You Tube will not work'

Early Times Report
jammu, Oct 4: The undeclared ban on social networking website Face Book and You Tube rocked the legislative Assembly today with the Leader of Opposition Mehbooba Mufti calling it an assault on freedom of speech and expression. She warned the authorities of disastrous consequences in case the ban was not lifted immediately. "This will push the youth to streets", she said. Pertinently, the Mufti Sayeed regime did not impose such restrictions on the use of internet.
However, a group of users told Early Times that the ban would make no difference. "If Government intends to prevent upload of pro-movement material, the ban will not help it. We can get the material uploaded from US, UK and even from Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi", they said.
A IT expert preferring anonymity did not contradict the group. "The users are right. They can upload the material from outside the State", he said.
The use of Face Book and the You Tube by the youth during the 2010 agitation gave sleepless nights to the Government and the security agencies. Some of users were taken into custody as well. The issue evoked a reaction from Union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the former Corps Commander.
On June 12 last year Omar wrote on Twitter. "I am staunch supporter of freedom of speech; those exercising this right should also take the responsibility that comes with it. I hate the idea of censorship but have seen for myself how dangerous inflammatory content on FaceBook and YouTube can be."
His comments came hours after the Union Communication Minister Kapil Sibal expressed concern over objectionable content on social networking sites.
"I suggested that these platforms should evolve a mechanism on their own to ensure that such contents are removed as soon as they get to know of it...I have told them this cannot go on," Sibal told reporters in New Delhi today.
Similarly former Corps Commander also resented what he called `misuse' of internet.
The ban has evoked severe reaction from human rights defenders. According to them the NC Government has already tarnished the image of India at the international level by curbing right to liberty and right to freedom of expression. "The ban on FaceBook and You Tube will further tarnish the image. For Omar's information, people were active on the YouTube even during previous regime. No curbs were sought then", they said.
