| Rahul promises ‘generous’ help to JK Government | | Zojilla tunnel project takes off amid tight security | | Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 4: Congress General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi today assured full support to Jammu Kashmir Government for developmental works. Addressing people after laying the foundation stone of a tunnel at Zojilla, Gandhi said the Union Government was more than willing to extend full support to the State for undertaking developmental projects. Rahul said the welfare of the people of the State was on Congress agenda. "Ladakh remains cut of from rest of the country for more than six months due to heavy snowfall. However, this tunnel will ensure round the year connectivity of the region to the outside world", he said. The Congress leader said the decision to construct the tunnel will prove a landmark decision for promotion of tourism in the State. "Now more and more tourists will visit the cold desert", he said adding "It will boost the economy of the State." The JKPCC chief, Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz, Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora and Union Transport Minister CP Joshi and the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accompanied Rahul to the site of the proposed tunnel. The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah addressed a gathering at Gagangeer on the Srinagar-Leh highway. "We are Indians and will stay Indians till this world lasts", he said. He urged Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to ensure smooth relations with the Union Government. "My father Sher-e-Kashmir shook hands with Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Similarly I and my son must have cordial relations with New Delhi", he said. In an unexpected reference to Rahul Gandhi, Farooq said: "You have many enemies. You have to face the hardships boldly. You have to be strong like your grandfather and mother, Sonia Gandhi", he said. Rahul is on a two day visit to the Valley. During his stay here, he is expected to chair the Executive Meeting of the Indian Youth Congress. He is likely to discuss the security of Panches and Sarpanches with the authorities. Meanwhile, the security in the Valley was beefed up in view of Rahul's visit. The Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for protests after congregational prayers on Friday to protest what he called turning the Kashmir University a den for hatching conspiracies against the people of Kashmir. The banned Kashmir University Students Union (KUSU) intends to hold protest against Rahul's Kashmir visit on Friday. "The authorities say politics shall not be allowed in the campus. But the Government brings all politicians to the campus to carry out their political activities. |
