| 'Department of Sports scurrying over careers' | | International Gymnasts write to VC JU | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Nov 21: t a time when University of Jammu is patting its own back for the conduct of a purely recreational and non competitive inter university cricket tournament for the employees, a group of international players have submitted a written representation to the Vice Chancellor University of Jammu, complaining that the Department of Sports and Physical Education had scuttled their career prospects by not fielding university team in the All India Inter University championships for the two consecutive years even as they were clear favourites to win medals for the University. These gymnasts, all of whom have won medals in the national championships and even represented the country have expressed grave anguish over the lackadaisical attitude of the department of Sports and Physical Education who did not take pain to find out if there were any players who could represent the university and inform them of the dates of inter university championship even as the calendar of the inter university championships is published well in advance. "We got to know from players of the other universities when they called us from Kurukshetra asking why we had not reached their for participation", said Tejpal, an international gymnast. "The department has become a rehabilitation centre of the retired officers as all the three coaches have retired and are serving on extension or re-employment and have no interest in the performance of the players while the director is a non technical person who has been thrust upon the department for more than three years now", said an official of the department. "Those who want to work sincerely and improve the standards of performance of the university teams are discouraged and marginalised by the Director who has no understanding of sports", he added. The gymnasts who have made the representation complain that the same thing happened the previous year also and the department kept sleeping over the calendar and did not send the entries to the host university in time, depriving them of the opportunity to participate. "Last year also we could have won at least six medals", said Manpreet Kour, another international gymnast. It is pertinent to mention here that While gymnasts of the state have been bringing laurels for the state year after year, JU sent its gymnastics team way back in 2002, when it won All India championship. Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor has taken a strong note of the representation and has called for an explanation from the Director in this regard. "Yes a representation has been received and the VC has taken a strong note of it", said an authoritative source in VC's secretariat pleading not to be named.
