Dr. Farooq Abdullah advises Azad without tackling Kamaal
11/23/2012 12:41:15 AM

early times report
Jammu, Nov 22: Former Chief Minister and NC patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah has always hit the headlines with his statements and he is again hitting the headlines with his latest statement concerning the health of his party, the NC.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah has requested Union Health Minister and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to be more careful while issuing statements. He has also said there is a strong possibility of some people within the NC trying to sabotage the relationship between the Congress and the NC.
It is strange and surprising that instead of asking his younger brother Dr. Mustafa Kamaal who has stirred the Hornet's Nest between the alliance partners in the state, the NC patron should be requesting Mr Azad to be careful while issuing statements. In something that adds to the surprise and bewilderment of the people, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has said his party would be analyzing what his younger brother has actually said. In today's World while every word uttered by a politician is available on a video tape, what does Dr. Farooq Abdullah want to analyze? Does he believe that a senior and matured politician like Mr Azad who has been on the national scene for such a long time would issue statements without cross checking on facts? It is clear from the statement made by Dr. Farooq Abdullah that the love of a father knows no bounds while it comes to saving the show for his son. Nobody can deny the elder Abdullah the right to defend and advise his son. He can also do that in his capacity as the Patron of the party. But, instead of trying to look for the causes of trouble elsewhere and blaming the allies, wouldn't it do the NC leadership immense good if it set its own house in order first?
Well, if we go by the denials issued by Dr. Mustafa Kamaal trying to distance himself from his earlier statements, then we would only be reopening the pages of his past. It has been the standard practice for Dr. Kamaal to issue statements, rake up issues and when the heat gets too much for him, he quietly distances himself from his own assertions of the past.
This is typical subterfuge and political parties cannot be run on subterfuge for long. The NC leadership will have to understand that it has to seriously address problems within the party before handing out free advices to allies. One can only advise caution to others if one steers clear of trouble personally. That perhaps is something the NC has refused to learn. Or is it both ways convenient for the party that claims strong political base in the Valley and the Jammu region as well?
