| VC watches infighting helplessly in KU | | 2 women spoil broth at MERC | | early times report Srinagar, Nov 22: Infighting between faculty members in several departments of Kashmir University has severely affected the academic environment in the Varsity with students being the worst sufferers. Sources told Early Times that several departments which includes prestigious Media Education and Research Centre (MERC) have become battlefields as the worst bickering is going on between, the senior faculty members. "Muslim Jan Editor in Department of MERC and Sabiya Mufti, Senior Assistant Professor MERC have made the department a virtual battle field. The fight between the two has been taking toll on the academic environment in the MERC," they said. A student of the MERC wishing anonymity said that these two female faculty members have spoiled the academic environment in the Department. "The Head of Department Prof S Mufeed Ahmad is so busy with other activities that he doesn't have time to solve the problems in the MERC," he said. Prof Mufeed who is HoD MERC, also holds additional charge of Director IT, and is the faculty member of Management Studies. "How can a person do justice with three assignments? It seems Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad is helpless before the faculty members of the MERC and the HoD as he is watching all the infighting as a mute spectator," the student added. The situation in Sociology, Psychology and few other departments is no different. Last year a senior faculty member of the Sociology Department had "intentionally failed" atleast 20 students in one Sociology of Religion paper to settle score with another faculty member. The students had later applied for re-evaluation after which most of them were declared successful. "However, despite establishing that the faculty member had intentionally failed the students to settle scores with her rival faculty member, KU authorities failed to take any action against the culprit," sources said. Similar is the case with Mathematics Department where some students last year alleged that they had been "intentionally failed" by one senior faculty member to settle scores with his rival. "All this is happening under the noose of the VC. But he isn't taking any action against the culprits. It seems as if he (Prof Talat) doesn't want to annoy anybody in the KU till he completes his term in May 2014," said a senior faculty member wishing anonymity. "We had high hopes that Prof Talat would rectify the wrongs done by the previous VC Prof Riyaz Punjabi. But half of tenure of Prof Talat is already over he is yet to take any decision which can have any positive impact on the academic environment in the KU," he added. |
