| Suspension of Jethmalani good development for J&K | | | RUSTAM
JAMMU, Nov 26: BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, who is being accused by a section of civil society and bulk of the print and electronic media of committing serious financial irregularities for amassing wealth, yesterday suspended with immediate effect noted Supreme Court lawyer and BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha Ram Jethmalani. The final decision will be taken today by the BJP Parliamentary Board. Announcing the suspension of Jethmalani, BJP national spokesperson Shah Nawaz Hussain told media persons in New Delhi that the national BJP president suspended Jethmalani because his statements were helping the Congress and the UPA Government and damaging the BJP. The immediate provocation was, it may be noted, Jethmalani's Saturday statement that hailed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his decision to appoint a new CPI Director ignoring the opposition registered through a letter by the Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley and Jethmalani's Sunday statement that no one had the power in the BJP to take action against him. The BJP president exercised the power vested in him by the party constitution and paved way for his expulsion from the party on the charge that he had been indulging in anti-party activities since long. Indeed, a very good decision.
The suspension of Jethmalani from the BJP will not only help it enforce discipline in the party, but it has also a very positive impact as far as Jammu & Kashmir is concerned. Jethmalani, who heads the controversial Kashmir committee, is known for his pro-separatist views. He has been visiting Kashmir from time to time and flirting with such extremists and pro-Pakistanis as Syed Ali Shah Geelani of Tehrik-e-Hurriyat. Besides, he has been at regular intervals criticizing New Delhi and accusing it of not doing anything to win over the so-called alienated Kashmiri Muslims.
The fact of the matter is that Jethmalani has been consistently muddying the Indian waters in Kashmir and directly and indirectly helping the cause of Kashmiri separatists as well as Pakistan whose single-point agenda all along has been to merge the state with Pakistan and complete what the Pakistani establishment calls the "unfinished agenda of partition". The local BJP leadership was never happy with Jethmalani and his forays in Kashmir because it was they who had to face the people's wrath for the activities undertaken by Jethmalani in Kashmir as well as Jammu. The local BJP leadership has never ever appreciated Jethmalani's views on Jammu & Kashmir.
So, the suspension of Jethmalani has two immediate fall-outs. One, it helps the BJP high command enforce discipline. Two, it has come as a rude shock for the Kashmiri separatists and will save the local BJP leadership from further embarrassment.
