| 'PDP sets political agenda in JK’ | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 26: Even if some people do not admit that People's Democratic Party (PDP) has emerged as an alternative to National Conference (NC), it has already changed the mood of the people if not the course of Jammu Kashmir's history. PDP happens to be the only party that pushed NC out of power through democratic means. Earlier, attempts were not democratic. In 1953 Sher-e-Kashmir was humiliated and dethroned and finally imprisoned. In 1984 NC lost power to horse trading by late Ghulam Mohammad Shah. But PDP did the inevitable in 2002. NC's Chief Ministerial candidate, Omar Abdullah lost from Ganderbal. This particular constituency was always NC's strong bastion. Sher-e-Kashmir always contested from there and so did Farooq Abdullah. NC had to sit in the opposition for the first time. Omar's success from Ganderbal in 2008 is attributed to non-performance of the PDP candidate than to the magic of the Sheikh Family. Had the PDP candidate lived up to the expectations of his voters the situation would have been different in 2008. PDP has gained popularity not only in Kashmir but has made inroads in Jammu region as well. During the past two years a number of people from Jammu have joined PDP. The fact that Jammu people prefer PDP to BJP and Congress reflects the sting that this party carries. There is no denying the fact that NC won all the seats from Srinagar in 2008 elections but, according to former Law Minister, Muzaffar Husain Beig, the miracle happened because of Geelani's election boycott call. The PDP has pushed NC to the wall and forced it to tread the `forbidden' path. Omar Abdullah seems desperate for an alliance with the `worms of the gutter' to strike a chord in 2014. In 2008 the alliance with Congress was formed after elections. Seeking pre-poll alliance with Congress reveals that all is not well for NC. The NC and the Congress will take some time in accepting the reality but political circles believe that PDP sets the political agenda of the state.
