| Gurpurab celebrated with fervour in Jammu | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
jammu, Nov 28: The winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir today celebrated Gurp-urab, the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji with religious fervour and gaiety. Dressed aptly to the occasion, members of the Sikh community, including women and children this morning thronged Gurudwaras and other religious places despite cold to offer special prayers on the occasion. The main function here was held at Gurudwara Bibi Chand Kour Samadh, situated in the heart of the City. Thousands of Sikhs from different parts of the city and outskirts visited the Gurudwara to join the prayers. During the occasion the various Sikh organizations passed various resolutions which included right for refuges at par with Kashmir Pandits and similar assistance be granted to them, as adhoc relief packages till compensation of property is not given, naming of road leading from Bikram Chowk to Railway Station, Jammu via Jammu University be declared as Guru Gobind Singh Marg; Chair to be established in Jammu University in honour of Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj and Punjabi to be introduced as optional Subject both at School and College level. The Sikh Sangat of Jammu and Kashmir demanded reservation of atleast 2% in all the educational/technical institutions. Gathering also demanded there should be no shifting of statue of Gen Bikram Singh from the existing place.
Meanwhile, special langar was also organised for the devotees in the Gurudwara. Similar celebration functions were also organised in other Gurdwaras of the winter capital. Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had also extended Gurpurab greetings to people and wished peace and prosperity in the state. However, restrictions on traffic were imposed around the venue where main function was held while tight security arrangements were also made for incident free celebrations.
