Jammu, Dec 2: State BJP President Shamsher Singh Manhas on Sunday said that his party was the only political outfit which is concerned to the welfare of the rural people and firmly believes in strengthening of the democracy via a powerful Panchayati Raj System.
Addressing a press conference here to apprise the people about the stand of the party on Legislative Council polls, he said, "Official machinery was pressed to campaign for the NC-Congress alliance candidates. Government flouted the model code of conduct which is undemocratic. Though every incident of violation of model code of conduct by the NC-Congress leaders was conveyed to the Election Commission of India and Returning Officer of the State, BJP candidates were not disappointed and made hectic efforts to contact and garner support from the panches and sarpanches even in the far flung areas." Manhas who was flanked by Rashpal Verma, BJP candidate for MLC from Jammu, Sat Sharma CA, State General Secretary and Dr. Nirmal Kamal, State Spokesperson expressed hope that BJP candidates will come out with success "as the masses are fed up of corruption and deceptive and arrogant attitude of the present Government which has refused to provide benefits due to panches and sarpanches as per even the J&K's own Panchayati Raj Act."
"State Government refused to bring 73rd and 74th Amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act on the plea that State's Panchayati Raj Act is superior. Why then the Government has not so far implemented those clauses which are beneficial for the panches and sarpanches?" he asked.
The BJP state President alleged that the Government was only issuing rhetoric statements. "They claim that they are committed to empowerment of panchayats. Why then the Government is not coming out of the shell of commitments and execute the process of empowerment. This Government is giving hollow statements only to befool the voters," he added.
Manhas claimed that most of the panches and sarpanches were against the government and committed to support to BJP candidates. Blaming the NC-Congress leadership, Manhas conveyed to the public and the voters that BJP was the only political outfit concerned to the welfare of the rural masses and firmly believe in strengthening of the democracy by chaste functioning of democratic process via a powerful Panchayati Raj System.
