| Poll campaigning brings CM's priorities to fore | | `He did not campaign for Cong candidates' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 2: The campaigning for four seats of the Legislative Council has brought the priorities of the Chief Minister to the fore. In Jammu he was conspicuous by his absence and camped mostly in the Valley. The National Conference (NC) working president and chief minister of coalition government Omar Abdullah sought vote from sarpanches and panches of Kashmir valley and in Jammu region he only campaigned in Rajouri and Poonch districts from where the NC candidate for J2 Dr. Shenaz Ganai is in fray for Monday's election. Ganai of NC and Sham Lal Bhagat of Congress are two candidates of coalition government but the chief minister only campaigned in Rajouri and Poonch areas where NC has better vote bank than other areas of Jammu area. Bhagat hails from erstwhile district Doda, where Omar didn't go for campaigning and only sent his political advisor Devender Singh Rana to do coalition candidates a favour. "This shows how much the chief minister cares for people of erstwhile district Doda who have suffered a lot due to the anti-people attitude of government," a senior Congress leader told Early Times. Not even Doda district, the chief minister did not show any interest in campaigning in areas of Jammu region where Congress is strong. "This is a part of bigger game plan from National Conference to weaken the Congress party and allow other parties to grow so that in 2014 assembly elections Congress doesn't get more seats than NC. That will ensure a Chief Minister from NC and form government with its chief minister," the Congress leader added. On Monday, sarpanches and panches will vote for four seats of legislative council for which Congress and NC have fielded two candidates each. The coalition government will be having a direct contest with main opposition party in the state Assembly Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which will have a direct impact on 2014 Assembly elections. The NC has tried everything to woo its activists to get the support for its candidates and CM himself sought vote from sarpanches and panches having inclination towards NC but at the same time didn't focus on those areas where Congress is strong. |
