| LC poll to determine NC-Congress tie-up is on decline or safe | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 2 : Though there are 37 candidates in the fray for election to the four seats in the Legislative Council, the poll results will determine whether the NC-Congress coalition is on the path of decline or has assumed bigger political size and strength. The polling is to take place Monday. It was quite a hectic campaigning for Legislative Council (LC) polls which witnessed a bitter war of words between the contesting parties. Luckily the campaigning has ended on Saturday without any major political upheaval. The elections are scheduled for December 3 and counting of votes would be held on December 8. A total of 37 candidates are left in the fray for the four seats of the upper house reserved for the Panchayat representatives. Nominations were filed by 44 candidates. Three nominations were cancelled while at least four candidates withdrew their names. Observers believe that NC-Congress coalition candidates will have a close contest with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates on two seats of Kashmir region, while in Jammu the contest is likely to be three-corner between coalition candidates and the BJP. Well the BJP rebels, the CPI-M and an independent MLA, Hakeem Mohammad Yasin have favoured vote as per the voters' conscience. The purpose of the BJP rebels' support for vote as per the conscience of the voters is a face saving device because the rebels do not want to get exposed on charge of supporting the NC candidates. In fact the main tie, that will determine the stature of the political parties, is between the coalition candidates and the PDP. If the PDP win two seats it would be a major defeat for the ruling coalition. Even if the ruling coalition loses one seat it would mean that the both the Congress and the NC have been plagued by factionalism and by lack of unity between the two partners of the ruling coalition. In fact loss of even one seat would mean loss of face for the ruling coalition. Though the coalition leaders expect to win all the four seats, political pundits differ on the ground that the PDP, which has been championing the cause for empowering panchayat members, could easily bag one seat. They said one may not feel surprised if the PDP wins two seats in the wake of growing dissensions within the stat unit of the Congress and the NC. |
