| Bhim Singh warns Govt against rigging LC polls | | "CM has instructed presiding officers to show 80% voting" | | Early Times Report
Jammu/Srinagar, Dec 2: National Panthers Party chief, Prof. Bhim Singh Sunday warned the coalition government of serious consequences if it tries to rig the Legislative Council elections like the past. He warned the polling officers not to play in the hands of the government to rig the polls "which is the intention of the government." The NPP chief claimed that the Chief Minister had issued instructions to the Presiding Officers to show 80 percent polling in each polling station and "if anybody fails to show this result he shall have to face disciplinary actions." After concluding his 14-day tour in support of his the party candidates Anita Thakur and sarpanch Mohammad Rafiq Chandel (Jammu Pradesh), Maqbool Malik and Dr. Iqbal Wani (Kashmir Province) Prof Singh accused the government of selecting the Block Headquarters as polling booth only to defraud the genuine Panchayat voters. He said that 50 blocks out of 66 in Jammu have no road communication or transport facilities to travel from their residences to the polling booths. "There is no regular public transport available for the voters in these 50 blocks," the NPP chief said. He quoted the example of his own village Panchayats, Bhugerian and Chanunta. "Panchayat members have to reach to block headquarters to cast their votes in Ghordi. To reach Ghordi they have to travel by public transports from their respective villages to Udhampur District Headquarters and to reach Ghordi they have to travel for around three hours in public transport. There is no regular transport available on this route" he said. "Same is the problem for the panchayat members to travel from Basantgarh or Dudu to reach Khaned." "Similarly, panchayat members of Dhanodi (Rajouri) have to cast their votes in Kalakote which takes five hours to reach. Panchayat Dugani, Changar, Lam have to reach Dungi Block Headquarter. To reach Dungi these members of panchayat have to walk on foot then travel for nearly six hours to reach the polling headquarters. There is no public transport available on this route. Similarly, the voters of Pargwal Panchayat (on International Border) have to reach Damana in public transport and then travel in different public transports from Damana to Akhnoor. This is an exercise of five to six hours. The similar is situation in Kathua District in Blocks Bani, Billawar and other areas. Several Panchayat members have started moving from their respective Pan-chayats this morning to reach the polling site," he added. Prof Singh blamed the government of creating hardship for the panchayat voters who have been duly elected by the people. "This is fraud on democracy and amounts to cheating the panchayats." He urged the Governor N N Vohra and the Director General of Police to intervene "so that the rigging can be stopped to restore the confidence of the people of J&K in the Indian democracy and the rule of law." |
