| Highway connecting Ladakh put through despite slippery road | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 2 : The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the state, has been put through despite slippery road conditions while far-flung and remote areas near the Line of Control (LoC) remained cut off due to snowfall since November 28. Official sources said that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway has cleared snow between Sonamarg-Zojila-Meenmarg. There was about one feet to two feet of snow accumulated on the highway at different places. "We allowed vehicles from both sides this morning, they said adding that the road was slippery due to below freezing temperature with the result vehicles are moving very slowly. They said in case of fresh snowfall and further drop in the temperature, the highway would be closed for six winter months because of threat of avalanches. The BRO had announced the closure of the Srinagar-Leh national highway between Sonmarg to Meenamarg from November Ist. However, as the weather remained dry, the transport minister Qamar Ali Akhoon, who represents Kargil constituency, announced that the highway will remain open till November 15. He had announced that the road will remain open till weather permits. But he has requested the passengers as well as the drivers to make their plans according to the weather conditions and consulting the traffic police before starting the journey on the highway. Sources said that border towns of Machil and Karnah and other areas near the LoC remained closed due to heavy snowfall at Sadhna top and Razdan pass. The BRO, responsible for the maintainance of these roads, have put into service sophisitcated machines and men to clear snow before allowing traffic on the highway, which remained closed during winter months. However, roads to Tangdhar and Keran, two border towns were put through yesterday despite snowfall. |
