srinagar, Dec 9: An 80-year old man was sentenced to life by a trail court for killing his sister-in-law six years ago in the border district of Poonch in Jammu division. District and session judge Poonch Kishore Kumar after hearing the counsels awarded lifer to Lekh Raj of Jallas village on Friday. However, there are contradictory reports regarding Lekh Raj's age. While public prosecutor Chaudhary Nazir Hussain said he was 85-years-old when the case was lodged in 2006, the defence lawyer Syed Mushtaq Shah claimed his age was mentioned as 80 by the judge. This is one of the rare cases in which an old man has been convicted and sentenced to life for murder. Police had registered a case of murder under section RPC 302 in 2006.Police had also slapped a case under section 3/27 arms act against him. The incident dates back to 2006 when Lekh Raj shot his sister-in-law by his riffle in the fields killing her on the spot. "The deceased was harvesting wheat when the incident occurred. He objected to her decision and shot her dead. He wanted to kill two- three people more but they fled from the scene to avoid his wrath," said Chaudhary. After committing the crime, the public prosecutor said, Lekh Raj fled to jungles to evade arrest. "He engaged police for full day in the jungles before he was caught. Though he was old man, he was physically fit," he said. Defence counsel Syed Mushtaq Shah said the court has awarded Lekh Raj simple life imprisonment (considering his old age). "The judge has mentioned his age as 80 in the judgment. Everyone has written his age approximately (because there is no such proof)," he said.Shah said they will decide on Monday whether to go for appeal or not. "His son is meeting me on Monday. We will decide on that day (whether to go for appeal or not)", he said. |
